What if everything you said
(and I do mean everything that comes out
of your mouth) came to pass?
Would you or a loved one be dead?
"Your killing me!" "I love her to death"
"You just gave me a heart attack!"
"Your workout killed me!"
"My kids will be the death of me!"
Would you be sick? "That makes me sick!" "I am sick over this", "I feel sick" "My son has strep so looks like we are all going to get it" "My mom had diabetes so I will get it too"
Would you be afraid? "That scared me to death" "I am so worried", "I don't fly because I am afraid of getting into a crash" "Nobody will ever love me"
Would you be poor? "I can't afford it" "I am broke", "We will never have enough money to do that"
Would you fail? "That is too hard for me to do" "I can't do it" "It is impossible" "I am just not strong enough to do that" "I am just not qualified enough to get that job"
Would your children suffer? "She is so hyper and out of control" "He isn't good at math" "He has a weak immune system and catches everything" "She is not a good driver"
Remember, the tongue speaks what is in the heart and it is the tongue that will either justify or condemn us before God. Jesus said in Matthew 12:34-35 "Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things".
Now here is the most awesome part: Matthew 12:36 "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment". Oh my gosh!!!! Look out! 12:37 "For by your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned". Do you see how this is all up to you? The tongue is a fire and remember it only takes a little spark to burn up a whole forest.
Just think about the horrible damage that has been done by words: gossip, rumors, cutting remarks, marriages destroyed, childhood's destroyed, reputations ruined, friendships damaged, & the list goes on. I don't think that there is one sin that is committed where it didn't involve words, either through thoughts or verbally by the tongue.
Forget talking bad to and about other people - what about what you say to yourself! "I'm so fat", "I am so ugly", "I will never be successful", "I am too weak", "I don't have enough money." "This is too hard for me." "Nobody loves me." "I am too tired." "I am too scared." "I have no will power."
Guess what, you will be all of these if you don't stop speaking it.
I have to watch my words constantly, especially when I am feeling fleshy or not having the best attitude or if I am upset with someone.
Our words are powerful. Many times I hear people just running their mouths without even thinking what they are saying and it pains me to think how they are negatively effecting themselves and others around them because of it. When I do mess up, I take it back and ask for forgiveness and work harder to not do it again.
So practice controlling your tongue and work hard to only speak positive things about yourself and others. You will be amazed at how well your life will change positively because of it!
Psalm 34:13 "Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit"
